Well, shizzle my nizzle.
Here is a book that is shaping up to be amazing, incredible: Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin. It's so far about an aristorcratic young wife of a rich businessguy trying to get this broke communist to ghostwrite an SF novel for her, in the 50s. So they meet secretly to feel each other up and plot it out. The SF plot is about this ancient society where the slave children are forced to weave beautiful carpets, because only childrens' hands are small enough for the delicate maneuvers, and the constant close work makes them go blind. And then they're sold into brothels. But some escape and use their tactile development to become assassins.
